The City Planners have removed the remaining 120 evacuees from the Exposition Center and placed them in transitional housing at four different hotels in Greenville. The Salvation Army, in partnership with several local Churches and Greenville Meals on Wheels, are continuing to deliver three meals per day to each of them. This will continue over the next month as the evacuees are assimilated into our community, or return to New Orleans.

Over the next few days, The Salvation Army social workers will take case histories of each evacuee and provide food, personal hygiene supplies, Kitchen/cooking utensils and clothing vouchers while they make longer range plans for themselves and their families.

Now for some statistics on service to the evacuees:

  • 1037 volunteers contributed 3480 hours of service
  • 12,214 Meals were served
  • 25,208 Snacks were served

The citizens of Greenville have characteristically opened their hearts, pocketbooks and given of their valuable time (volunteering) to the Katrina evacuees who have been housed in the emergency shelter at the Exposition Center.

Partnering with many of the local churches and businesses, The Salvation Army has served 6,358 meals.

The Salvation Army has set up a "cashless" commissary at the Exposition Center for the evacuees to "shop" for needed new clothing and other personal items.

Last night, 108 Hurricane Katrina evacuees arrived at the Palmetto Expo Center where they found a little salvation in such a tragic time. The Greenville Salvation Army is doing our part to make these refugees of disaster as comfortable as possible.

With the help and generosity of area volunteers, we are providing three hot meals and snacks to evacuees and first responders each day. In fact, since their arrival, we've already provided 600 hot meals.

Most evacuees arrived with nothing but the clothes on their backs, so we provided a hot shower and clothing. We were also able to give a teddy bear to each child and provide debit cards to everyone who needs to buy special items.

Additionally, in the coming months many evacuees will be facing some serious legal problems regarding everything they've lost. Fortunately, a group of attorneys is on hand at the Expo Center to answer questions and help resolve legal issues.
